The lon Gene and Degradation of ß-Galactosidase Nonsense Fragments

ABSTRACT

N-terminal ß-galactosidase fragments are rapidly degraded in growing cells of Escherichia coli. Mutations in the lon gene are sufficient to enhance the stability of these polypeptides.
