The ATP-hydrolyzing subunit MalK of the ATP-binding cassette transporter
for maltose of Escherichia coli is demonstrated to be accessible to
digestion by proteinase K in right-side-out membrane vesicles. This finding
suggests a partial transmembrane orientation of the protein.
