Mutants with altered forms of GltC, a positive LysR-type regulator of
Bacillus subtilis glutamate synthase gene expression, were isolated. The
mutant GltC proteins stimulated expression from the wild-type gltA promoter
region 1.5- to 2.0-fold and from mutant promoter regions up to 80-fold.
Moreover, expression of gltA became much less dependent on a nitrogen
source-associated signal.
