The Rickettsia prowazekii sigma factor was overexpressed, purified, and
used to reconstitute RNA polymerase holoenzyme species. R. prowazekii RNA
polymerase-promoter complexes were unstable and remained dissociable and
heparin sensitive under conditions in which the corresponding Escherichia
coli complexes were not. The R. prowazekii core played the major role in
determining heparin sensitivity.
