ABSTRACT
MARTIN, WILLIAM R. (University of Chicago, Chicago, Ill.), FRANK FRIGAN, AND EDNA H. BERGMAN. Noninductive metabolism of itaconic acid by Pseudomonas and Salmonella species. J. Bacteriol. 82:905908. 1961Ten molds, three yeasts, and 44 bacteria were screened for the noninductive metabolism of itaconic acid by growing in complete media containing traces of C14-labeled itaconic acid. Several Salmonella and Pseudomonas species incorporated significant quantities of radioactivity into their cellular components. The enzymatic conversion of itaconic acid to citramalic acid was demonstrated in cell-free extracts from both P. aeruginosa and S. chittagong.
