ABSTRACT
Chemostat-grown Escherichia coli showed recA+-dependent resistance to gamma radiation even though between 50 and 75% of the population possessed only a single unreplicated genome, suggesting that recombination between homologous chromosomes before replication is not necessary for manifestation of recA+-dependent resistance to gamma radiation.
