Infection of Escherichia coli in the presence of chloramphenicol with
mutant filamentous phage that are defective in the initiation of minus-
strand DNA synthesis induces the SOS response as monitored by cellular LexA
levels. This observation demonstrates that single-stranded DNA serves as a
primary signal for SOS induction in vivo.
