About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover photograph (Copyright © 1999, American Society for Microbiology. All Rights Reserved.): Appearance of mismatch-repair-deficient (MMR-) mutator subpopulations as colony sectors. A mutT derivative of a Bgl- strain was plated on minimal glucose plates with 5-bromo-4-chloro-3-indolyl-beta-D-glucoside. MMR- sectors (e.g., mutH or mutS) are revealed by frequent blue Bgl+ papillae (demonstrating repeat tract instability). Here, an MMR- mutant has risen at approximately the fifth cell division, resulting in a thin sector of the colony displaying repeat tract (or microsatellite) instability.
