Six-day-old cowpea (Vigna unguiculata [L.] Walp) nodules were embedded in paraffin and processed for localization of Sinorhizobium ferdii UDSA257 NoIX, a type III-secreted protein involved in soybean cultivar specificity. The burgundy color indicative of specific labeling of NoIX is predominantly present in the infection threads. (See related article on page 831.)
