The lumen of the lysosome-like parasitophorous vacuole was exposed using a dry-cleave method to reveal numerous pleomorphic bacteria. C. burnetii genes involved in remodeling this vacuole to promote robust growth are likely conserved among disparate C. burnetii isolates.
