The rough variant population has acquired a mutation in wapH which causes it to form (unlike the wild-type population) close structural association with Acinetobacter cells. This acquired phenotype is clearly advantageous as the P. putida population is totally dependent on the excretion of benzoate from the Acinetobacter cells. (See related article on page 4932.)
