Cover photograph (Copyright © 2007, American Society for Microbiology. All Rights Reserved.): Confocal laser scanning microscopy image slide of a mixed-species biofilm community consisting of Acinetobacter sp. strain C6 (red) and a biofilm-evolved rough colony variant of Pseudomonas putida KT2440 (green). The rough variant population has acquired a mutation in wapH which causes it to form (unlike the wild-type population) close structural association with Acinetobacter cells. This acquired phenotype is clearly advantageous as the P. putida population is totally dependent on the excretion of benzoate from the Acinetobacter cells. (See related article on page 4932.)
