In this issue, using genetic and genomic approaches, Plaut et al. provide evidence that the bacterial S-layer protein Sap is involved in AP50c infectivity, most likely acting as the phage receptor, and furthermore suggest that the genes spo0A, spo0B, and spo0F may regulate synthesis of Sap and/or formation of the S layer. In this scanning electron microscopy image, phage particles are shown attached to wild-type B. anthracis Sterne vegetative cells. Bacteria and phage were pseudocolored using Adobe Photoshop CS6.
