  • a Bacteria were grown for 24 h in S medium supplied with mannitol and aspartate. The fate of [U-14C]sucrose (0.5 mM, 23.3 GBq/mmol) was followed in the absence of NaCl (−NaCl) or in the presence of NaCl (+NaCl). Salt concentration was adjusted to allow 80% inhibition of growth ofS. meliloti (0.5 M NaCl), R. leguminosarum bv. phaseoli, R. leguminosarum bv. viciae, S. fredii, and M. huakuii (0.3 M NaCl), and B. japonicum(0.15 M NaCl).
