  • a Cortical fragments from B. subtilis (∼1 mg) were digested with CFLE, and the resulting muropeptides were separated by HPLC as described in Materials and Methods. The major peak fractions, A and B, were collected. Their nonreduced and reduced materials were analyzed for amino acids and amino sugars. These values are normalized, with the result for muramic acid set at 1, and are presented in a molar basis. Mur, muramic acid; MurOH, muramitol; Glc, glucosamine; GlcOH, glucosaminitol; Glu, glutamic acid; Ala, alanine; Dpm, diaminopimelic acid.
