• a Amino acid residues that are substituted with completely different amino acids are in red, and similar substitutions are in purple. Residues important for polypeptide binding (red asterisks), GroES contact (blue asterisks), and ATPase activity (green asterisks) that were identified in previous studies are marked at the bottom of the alignment (12). The percentage identity (%I) and the percent similarity (%S) were calculated based on the 22 amino acids aligned above. The numbering of the amino acid residues was the same as that one used for E. coli GroEL (12).
